Watson Could Face Death Penalty in US

The infamous honeymoon scuba killer Gabe Watson is facing the possibility of the death penalty if he is deported back to the United States.

Deportation appears the most likely scenario for Watson after the state and federal governments yesterday indicated they could not support any moves by the US to extradite him if it meant he would face the death penalty in Alabama.

Watson, 32, is serving 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of his wife, Tina, who died while scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef in October 2003.

Alabama authorities have already requested Watson's case file from Queensland police in a bid to retry him for murder and have indicated they will seek the death penalty.

Tina's family, who were outraged over the sentence, this week accused Queensland authorities of failing to co-operate with US prosecutors.
