Navy SEAL Dies in Diving Accident

While our sport remains among the safest in the world, we must always be weary of the fact that accidents do happen -- even to those with extensive training.

A Navy diver has died while training in the waters off of Bremerton.

Navy officials said Eric F. Shellenberger, a special warfare operator, died on May 7 in a diving incident.

While underwater Thursday morning, Shellenberger, 36, ran into trouble and signaled for an emergency ascent. When he surfaced, he was not responsive, officials said.

Shellenberger was rushed to the pier then to a nearby hospital, but could not be revived.

While the cause of death has yet to be determined, America has lost another hero. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shellenberger's fiance, family, and friends.
